INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP TO SHED LIGHT ON NEW DEPRESSION RESEARCH AND TREATMENT METHODS
Quality Home Health Care Services of Michigan to host 'Dodging Depression with Tai Chi' in Warren
Millions of Americans suffer from mood disorders each year, with a vast majority experiencing varying levels of depression. Older adults are extremely susceptible to the disease, yet often, it is difficult for families, caregivers and even medical professionals to detect. Learning to recognize symptoms has long been the key to treating the illness; however, new research is touting one innovative method for combating depression’s hold on the nation’s seniors.
At its annual meeting this month, the American Psychiatric Association names Tai-Chi-Chih – a brief, standardized version of Tai Chi – as a proven method for improving resilience, quality of life and cognition in depressed older adults. Inspired by this research, Quality Home Health Care Services of Michigan will hold Dodging Depression with Tai Chi, a free community event to serve as an outlet for informational presentations and interactive workshops relating to recognizing signs of depression, the link with diabetes and how Tai Chi positively affects those with depression.
From 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, July 8, Dodging Depression with Tai Chi will feature the following presenters and topics:
- An Instructor from Zen Marital Arts to lead an interactive fitness workshop to demonstrate Tai-Chi-Chih and provide information on its positive effects on both physical and mental health;
- Renella Thomas, R.N. from QHHC, to provide tips on recognizing signs of depression in older adults and care options for those with existing depression; and
- Dr. Peter Lichtenberg, Director of the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology, to discuss research linking co-existing depression and diabetes to major health complications.
QHHC also will provide free hypertension and diabetes screenings to all attendees.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call toll free 866.270.2558.
